The Journey

I love the work of Joseph Campbell, in particular his defining work of the Hero’s Journey: the archetypal stages of evolution and individuation throughout our lives. Looking back at my own path I’ve found it has been strikingly…. Literal!

My call to adventure came in 2002 when I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce/Economics at the University of Western Australia. Why choose this degree? Because I thought my other options were ‘Science’ and ‘Arts’. The short-sighted horizons of an industrialised education system.

Like many of my friends at the time, I decided to travel. Stepping on a plane with just a backpack and an enthusiastic demeanour, I sat next to a woman who looked at me and said, "Don’t forget to contact your guardian angels."

The threshold, the supernatural aid, and the guardian all in one. Her words were like a spanner in the works of my logical mind. I did contact my angels, or whatever that force beyond our regular awareness should be called. In that moment, and every moment since that I've called on them, I've heard them respond.

Over the next four years I would go on what I consider to be my greatest adventure. It involved pagan witches, psychic mediums, clairvoyants, shamans, mushroom journeys, Burning Man, Glastonbury, Ayahuasca, Vipassana meditation, pretty much Richard Dawkins' worst nightmare.

And it all lead me to perhaps the most important destination of the spiritual path: a deep abyss of confusion and an overwhelming sense of being totally, utterly lost. So deep was this abyss that my literal symbolism took me to an iron ore mine in the desert of Western Australia: a dark night of the soul, my death and rebirth.

Learning and Teaching

I was reborn into my second call to adventure in 2008: Ubud, Bali. I needed to find a way to ground all of the teachings that had occurred in my 20s. Ubud delivered in spades.

There I found a gifted teacher of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Its non-invasive, yin approach to healing really appealed to me, and finally I’d found a true mentor who was able to track my progress and help me tune my perception.

Through Heaven & Earth Workshops I was blessed to find my second great love: Psychological Astrology. I learned with Steven Forrest, Rick Levine, Jeff Jawer and Melanie Rhinehart. Melanie would become a great friend and mentor on my path towards deeply learning the archetypal language of astrology.

13 months later, having learned a lot but not enough to call myself a therapist, practitioner or astrologer, and having run out of that valuable resource called money, I made my way to my second abyss: Taiwan.

The Return

I was fortunate in that my Craniosacral teacher also moved to Taiwan, just 20 minutes down the road. Over the 5½ years I spent teaching English (mainly kindergarten age 3-6 years old) I continued to learn and to ground in the wisdom of my mentor through conversations that covered everything from healing to the nature of the Universe itself.

Added to this was studying at the London Faculty of Astrological Studies, traveling to California for a Womb Surround Workshop with Ray Castellino, completing a 6 month Basic Counseling Skills certificate with Metavision Institute, an introduction to Feldenkrais with the MBS Academy and finally ending up back in Perth to do a two-year diploma in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy through Body Intelligence. Not to mention the valuable skills learned by teaching children a foreign language.

By mid-2016, I was ready to offer what I had spent almost 15 years cultivating. Transformation, Atonement and Return came in the form of an offer to work with Radiantly Alive Yoga Studio in Ubud in their newly formed healing department. From then until now, I’ve been offering Astrological Counseling and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy as personal sessions and treatments, as well as many evolving and expanding workshops in which those teaching skills are utilised.

Since writing the above I have begun studying again at the Metavision Institute to become a Holistic Psychotherapist. The course draws on the pioneering work of Arnold Mindell; working with dreams, body symptoms, quantum field theory, group dynamics and so much more. The evolution of this work continues and I'm hoping to tie together the stars, the body, the psyche and the Dao as we move forward towards a new paradigm, both personally and collectively.

I look forward to seeing you on the path. While you’re here… You might like to ask yourself...

What’s your Hero’s Journey?
